Manufacturing Development Engineer

About Voxel
Voxel Innovations develops and manufactures precision components using Electrochemical Machining (ECM), an advanced manufacturing technology capable of shaping difficult metal alloys with exceptional precision. Our 30 person team develops the process, designs and builds the equipment and tooling, and manufactures parts for aerospace, energy, medical, industrial, and other demanding applications - all under one roof.
We are looking for a Manufacturing Development Engineer to join our team for prototyping and process development for new products. This is a highly hands-on role for someone who likes building things, running experiments, troubleshooting equipment, and figuring out how to make complex processes work reliably.
The Role
You will execute development projects, run ECM experiments and prototype parts, and find ways to take a part from first concept to ready-for-production. This is a complex process involving electrical signals, power supplies, chemistry, high-pressure pumps, motion control, 3D shaped electrodes, metrology, etc., and you will (with training) figure out how these all interact to achieve the end result.
A typical project might start with you or another engineer defining an experiment or prototype. You may inspect and prepare the tooling, assemble it into an ECM machine, precisely align the setup, configure machine parameters, run the test, monitor what happens, measure the results, and then iteratively improve the process with the engineering team.
This role requires someone who can work independently within engineering direction and who understands that small details matter. Cleanliness, alignment, organization, documentation, and seemingly minor setup differences can determine whether a precision manufacturing process succeeds or fails. Your job will be running these manufacturing experiments, understanding what works or doesn’t, and making changes to improve outcomes or identify entirely new technical approaches. This position is full-time based in Knightdale, NC.
About You
You are detail oriented, curious, and comfortable working with experimental setups. You enjoy understanding why something works rather than simply following instructions. You take pride in precise work and notice details others may overlook. You collaborate with other engineers, ask good questions when something isn't clear, and then independently execute the work. When equipment fails or results don't make sense, you investigate to understand why rather than simply work around the problem. Additionally, you take ownership and are willing to help solve whatever technical problem is keeping the team from moving forward.
Job Description
- Set up and run engineering experiments, prototype parts, and development trials on Voxel's ECM equipment.
- Prepare, inspect, assemble, and precisely align electrodes, tooling, fixtures, and machine components.
- Configure machine recipes and operating parameters in collaboration with engineers; monitor runs, recognize abnormal conditions, and document results.
- Measure and inspect tooling, machine setups, and prototype parts using precision metrology equipment.
- Where needed, help to assemble, install, and commission custom ECM machinery and supporting systems, including mechanical assemblies, sheet metal, plumbing, wiring, and utilities.
- Maintain clean, organized, well-documented work areas, tooling, equipment, and experiments.
Qualifications
- Experience in manufacturing, machining, automation, engineering technology, equipment assembly, or a similar technical environment.
- Engineering degree in a relevant field such as manufacturing, mechanical, and industrial.
- Mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience building, operating, repairing, or troubleshooting technical equipment.
- Ability to read engineering drawings, technical documentation, and basic mechanical or electrical schematics.
- Working familiarity with mechanical systems, pumps/plumbing, pneumatics, sensors, wiring, and industrial equipment.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, cleanliness, documentation, and quality.
- Curiosity to understand core engineering principals and root causes with the persistence and determination to get through the ups and downs of new development projects.
- Ability to learn new equipment, processes, and software and to work independently while collaborating closely with engineers, machinists, operators, and technicians.
- MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: Due to U.S. government contract requirements, all employees must be either a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident with a valid I-551 card (green card). Work Visas are not acceptable. Employment eligibility will be verified as part of the hiring process.
- Submittal of a cover letter describing why you are interested in working at Voxel and our mission.
- You'll work on technology found almost nowhere else in manufacturing and see the direct results of your work. You'll work side-by-side with other engineers, chemists, machinists, and technicians developing new processes, building machines, solving difficult problems, and turning experiments into reliable production capabilities.
- We're a small company, which means you'll have meaningful responsibility and the opportunity to learn across disciplines rather than being confined to a narrow job description.
- We invest in our people. As a new hire, you will work closely with our engineering team to master Voxel’s proprietary electrochemical manufacturing processes. We value curiosity and technical aptitude; we provide the hands-on environment and mentorship necessary to build expertise in advanced manufacturing systems that aren't found anywhere else.
- Our core values guide how we work: Expect Excellence, Do Right By Others, Always Getting Better, and What Would Happen If...?
